Ealdorman was a title used in Anglo-Saxon England for a royal official who had oversee royal estates. In later Anglo-Saxon England, the ealdorman evolved into the title of earl.
Definition
Ealdorman is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning a chief or leader of a shire, or county. In England, the term was used from the ninth century onwards to designate an official who exercised delegated authority on behalf of the king, usually presiding over the shire court. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the term fell out of use, replaced by the Norman title of sheriff.
